Student Classification

Undergraduate students are classified according to the number of credits they have accumulated (either transferred or earned at the University of Indianapolis):

Freshman: A regularly admitted student who has earned less than 26 credits.
Sophomore: A student who has earned at least 26 credits but fewer than 60 credits.
Junior: A student who has earned at least 60 credits but fewer than 92 credits.
Senior: A student who has earned 92 credits or more.

The number of credits for which a student registers determines the student's status.
A full-time student is one who registers for 12 or more credits during a semester, or
for 12 credits between the two summer intersessions; a part-time student registers for
fewer than this number of credits.

Academic Policies

Class Attendance Policy
Class attendance is an important part of the academic process. Students are expected to attend classes regularly and to manage their schedules in order to meet the demands of their courses and other activities. In addition to jeopardizing course grades, failure to attend classes may adversely affect a student's financial aid, eligibility for athletic competition, or other co-curricular programs.

Faculty establish, publish, and enforce attendance policies for their classes. Faculty take attendance and report absences to the registrar. Faculty may request reasonable documentation or verification of claims regarding absences. Students should report absences due to illness directly to the professor and arrange to make up work, tests, or other assignments. Students may be administratively withdrawn from class because of excessive absences.

Annual & Semester Honors
Annual and semester honor rolls encourage scholarship of high quality and give public recognition to students whose scholastic attainment is commendable.

  Presidential Scholar:

Any student who completes at least 12 semester hours during a regular semester with a grade point average of 3.7 or above is eligible for the Presidential Scholar List.

  Honor Roll:

Any student who completes at least 12 semester hours during a regular semester with a grade point average of at least 3.4 but less than 3.7 is eligible for the Semester Honor Roll.

  Annual Honor Roll:

A student who completes at least 12 semester hours during an academic year (two regular semesters) with a grade point average of 3.4 or above for the hours earned during that academic year is eligible for the Annual Honor Roll. Any student who has been on the Presidential Scolar List or the Semester Honor Roll for the year would not be eligible for this duplicate honor.

Graduation Honors
Academic honors are awarded at commencement in recognition of a student's having
maintained unusually high scholarship averages. In order to be eligible for graduation
honors, a student must have earned at least 62 hours at the University of Indianapolis.

Summa Cum Laude:
Awarded to any student who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 or higher.
Magna Cum Laude:
Awarded to any student who has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.65 but less than 3.85.
Cum Laude: Awarded to any student who has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.45 but less than 3.65.

Academic Probation & Ineligibility
Students failing to meet the university's minimum standards of academic performance are either placed on probation or declared ineligible to reenroll, based on the cumulative grade point average.

  Scholarship Probation:

Determined twice a year, at the conclusion of Semester I and at the conclusion of Summer Intersession II. Students placed on academic probation are restricted to 12-13 hours per regular semester and are not eligible for active participation in any organization that officially represents the institution.

  Academic Eligibility:

Determined once a year, at the conclusion of Summer II. Any student who has been declared academically ineligible may not return to the university until one regular semester (Semester I or II) has elapsed. Following the absence of at least one regular semester, an ineligible student may petition the Academic Petitions Committee for readmission. Decisions for readmission will be based upon evidence that the applicant is prepared to improve the quality of her or his work.

Academic probation and ineligibility are determined by total hours (which include hours earned at the University of Indianapolis, hours transferred from another university, and hours earned by examination) and cumulative grade point average, as indicated below:

Academic Probation Academic Ineligibility
Total Hours: Cumulative GPA Range: Total Hours: Minimum Cumulative GPA:
12-24 1.500-1.699 12-24 1.500
25-36 1.600-1.799 25-36 1.600
37-58 1.700-1.899 37-58 1.700
